This wasn’t how things were supposed to turn out. As a caregiver for your elderly parent, because you lived right down the road from them this seemed like a reasonable option. You felt it was your responsibility and, besides, just about everyone else in your family was turning to you to step up and provide this much-needed care and support.
However, the stress keeps building.
You just don’t know what to do. Every day seems to get worse. No matter what you try, no matter what types of strategies you employ, you can’t seem to get through an afternoon safely. You keep going home more stressed, and it’s affecting your work, your personal relationships, your marriage, and even your health. You don’t know how much more you can take.
There are things you can do to help reduce stress and improve life as a family caregiver. Below are a few to consider.
-First, set limits.
It’s not only about setting limits on your time, but also just how much you are willing and able to physically, mentally, or emotionally handle in this type of situation. Just as with any other job you take on, there are limits to what you are capable of performing. Understand these limits and set them with the elderly person leaning on you and anyone else who has a vested interest in the care you provide.
Exercise helps your body stay physically healthy, your heart gets stronger, and it also releases endorphins and other important chemicals in the brain that help you feel better. If you don’t think you have time to exercise, realize that hiring a home care aide could be an asset for you this year.
-Third, eat healthily.
When you begin caring for somebody else, you often run out of time to make healthy, nutritious meals for yourself at home. If that happens, it can affect many other aspects of your life, including the stress you experience as a caregiver.
-Finally, rely on home care services.
A home care aide hired through an agency can be an invaluable asset for most family caregivers all across the country. If you have reached the point where it feels as though each day is only getting worse, the stress is getting more challenging, and it is directly impacting your work, relationships, and health, it is time to seek help.
For everyone else, it’s best not to wait; rely on home care now so you don’t have to feel as though every day is just getting tougher.
As a physician who lives and serves in Northern Virginia, I have come to know several people who at some time in their life needed home care services. In my office I hear stories of good and bad experiences and I desired to offer something better – a company that would serve as a blessing to the clients we serve by providing them with reliable, quality, and compassionate care. Having served as a primary care physician, I understand the needs of patients and their family who often times do not have the assistance they desperately need. So I have created a company that delivers on providing peace of mind, recovery time, a lending hand, a stress free environment, and a constant companion.
As a native of the Washington, DC, I have truly enjoyed working in this area and volunteering my time in a variety of social and civic organizations in DC, MD and VA. I feel is it important to give back to your community and be of service to others.
I also believe in the importance of living healthy and having emotional stability and peace of mind. As a local physician and health coach I will add a sense of confidence, trust, and expertise unlike any other home care agency.
I work hard everyday at Brighthope Homecare to do what I do best – care for those in need and make a positive impact in the lives of our clients!
