Tips for Improving Your Senior’s Oral Health

Caregiver in Woodbridge VA: Senior's Oral Health

Taking care of your parent’s health is one of your most important priorities as a family caregiver.

There are many ways you can do this, but one of the simplest and most accessible is to take care of their oral health. What happens in your senior’s mouth makes an impact on their entire body. Infections and other problems in their mouth can spread throughout their body, and put their heart, liver, kidneys, digestive system, and brain at risk. Some of these health issues can even threaten their life. In the simplest form, these complications can be uncomfortable and make it more difficult for your senior to get the nutrition they need. It is vital to create and maintain a good oral health approach for your senior so they can avoid painful and dangerous complications.

Use these tips to improve your senior’s oral health:

-Ensure they brush their teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. They should brush more frequently if they eat or drink food that is particularly acidic or sugary

-Make sure your senior flosses when they brush. It doesn’t matter if they floss before or after brushing, though some prefer flossing before as it then allows for brushing away any debris. If your parent is not good at flossing, consider a water flosser.

-If your parent wears dentures, make sure they fit well and do not cause abrasions or other injuries.

-Make sure your senior removes their dentures each night and cleans them using a non-abrasive denture cleaner, not toothpaste.

-If your parent experiences pain, discomfort, bleeding, or other signs of problems, they should go to the dentist as promptly as possible. This allows for quick resolution of the problem, which reduces the risk of serious problems.

Personal care needs are some of the most important daily tasks people complete.

For elderly adults, fulfilling these tasks can become more difficult due to challenges and limitations that reduce their ability to manage things such as bathing, grooming, and hygiene. Home care can make these more accessible for your parents. An in-home senior care services provider can offer physical support and assistance, provide reminders for those seniors with a cognitive functioning decline, and model good techniques so seniors can keep up with their health and enjoy a greater sense of independence and control over themselves.
