Dementia affects more than 5 million Americans but a new study in The Lancet shows that 1 in 3 cases of dementia could be prevented. Healthy habits are not only important in protecting against heart disease and diabetes but also dementia. The article cites that dementia is not an illness that will inevitably occur as you age, but just as other illnesses, there are perhaps modifiable health and lifestyle factors that play a role in the development or prevention of dementia. The Lancet Commission on dementia identified the following 7 factors that could modify the underlying disease process:

Pharrell Williams got it right with his song entitled, “Because I’m Happy”.   Is this a song you can sing and mean? Are you happy? Well a review in Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being analyzed more than 150 studies on the effect of happiness. It found that having a high subjective well-being can positively affect your health. Your cardiovascular system and your ability to fight off disease can be affected by your personal well-being rating. So what can you do? Well, engage in activities you like, avoid stress, and find peace so that you can sing the song out loud, “Because I’m Happy”!!
